Sir, I am Canadian and I live in Montreal. Please do not be fooled by Canada's reputation for "sanity" or "peacefulness", because it is not true. Canada is in perfect line with the US in EVERY SINGLE WAY, but the difference is that our government is very quiet about it. The Canadian government accommodates the US government (and the UK government) 100% and follows its footsteps, but without making it public knowledge. So it is even worse, because it is insidious. We as citizens can't even fight it because it is kept secret. Our government tells us one thing and then turns around and does exactly what the US government does. IT IS DISGUSTING and if you think you will retain your rights and Democracy by moving to Canada, you are wrong. I am sorry to tell you this, but Canada's reputation is a lie, a PR job and a disgusting let down. Forget about it. If I were you, I'd think of Tierra Del Fuego or maybe New Zealand, but NOT CANADA. We will go down with the US and nothing can stop it. Please heed my advice.

Sadly, I think the time has passed for my parent's generation. With rare exception, the Baby Boomer generation here is shiftless, lazy, apathetic, and content to hand over their liberties to others simply so they don't have to think or act on their own, or take any sort of personal responsibilities for their actions. Their time has passed, simply because they choose to let others do their thinking and take their actions for them.

What really frightens me is that my generation seems to be heading down that same path, only ignorant of the good life that our parents left behind. Almost none of my generation know about the amazing philosophies presented and adhered to by Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams, Allen, Henry, and many others. For us, it seems, the general consensus is that the government IS the state, and I find that to be atrocious. Every time some new bullcrap shows up off the legislative table, I look back to the Declaration of Independence, and sure enough, I find a mirror in the grievances we brought up against King George, and I tell myself that this is not what I served to protect. I swore to uphold the Constitution and defend it first, then obey the President after that obligation was met. And it looks to these trained eyes that our direst enemy is now domestic, not foreign.

It's been over two and a half centuries; maybe now it is time to renew our faith in ourselves as individuals in America, and to live the words of Jefferson when he said, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
